Help on using the Percent Body Fat (Circumference) Calculator
Description Given various measurements (e.g., height, weight, waist, etc.), the FitWise Fitness Calculator displays your predicted percentage of body fat.
The “Iliac” field refers to the “iliac crests” (i.e., the wing-like bones on the top of the pelvis). Thus, the Iliac measurement is the measurement around your “hip bones.” (This is the term used by the American Council on Exercise's (ACE's) Personal Trainer Manual, which is where we got the formula).
Usage
With the FitWise Fitness Calculator displayed:
- Use the Previous/Next buttons to display the Body Fat (Circumference) page.
- Choose the appropriate gender radio button.
- Enter the requested information in the text fields. Note that the available fields (e.g., height, weight, etc.) will be based on your gender.
- When prompted for the “iliac,” enter the circumference measured at your hip bones (the “iliac crests” are the wing-like bones on the top of the pelvis).
Your predicted percentage of body fat will be displayed.
Tips The predicted percent body fat helps you understand your how fit you are.
Use the
Body Fat (YMCA) calculator to determine your predicted body fat using the YMCA method (which requires only your gender, waist, and weight). Use the

Reference The body fat percentage is based on the Tran and Weltman formula in the American Council on Exercise's (ACE's) Personal Trainer Manual, Second Edition, page 187.
The body fat percentage categories used in the scale came from the American Council on Exercise's (ACE's) Personal Trainer Manual, Second Edition, page 192.
